The Red Parts: Autobiography of a Trial by Maggie Nelson
English | April 5, 2016 | ISBN: 1555977367 | EPUB | 224 pages | 2 MB

Late in 2004, Maggie Nelson was looking forward to the publication of her book Jane: A Murder, a narrative in verse about the life and death of her aunt, who had been murdered thirty-five years before. The case remained unsolved, but Jane was assumed to have been the victim of an infamous serial killer in Michigan in 1969.

Then, one November afternoon, Nelson received a call from her mother, who announced that the case had been reopened; a new suspect would be arrested and tried on the basis of a DNA match. Over the months that followed, Nelson found herself attending the trial with her mother and reflecting anew on the aura of dread and fear that hung over her family and childhood–an aura that derived not only from the terrible facts of her aunt’s murder but also from her own complicated journey through sisterhood, daughterhood, and girlhood.

The Red Parts is a memoir, an account of a trial, and a provocative essay that interrogates the American obsession with violence and missing white women, and that scrupulously explores the nature of grief, justice, and empathy.

Trial by Fire: One Man’s Battle to End Corporate Greed and Save Lives

Mike Burg, “Trial by Fire: One Man’s Battle to End Corporate Greed and Save Lives”
English | ISBN: 1942952562 | 2016 | PDF | 336 pages | 174 MB

In the face of corporate bullies, one lawyer’s passion and persistence paid off.

Bullied as a Jewish kid in the hardscrabble neighborhoods of Chicago, Mike Burg had to learn how to fight at a young age. As an adult who started his own law firm from scratch that fire—and understanding of the underdog—still burns and makes him one of America’s top trial lawyers fighting for consumers’ rights.

In Trial by Fire: One Man’s Battle to End Corporate Greed and Save Lives, read about Burg’s unwavering personal constitution to stand up for the weary, the weak, and the downtrodden at all costs. Follow the justice as he takes on a negligent gas company and wins not only financial settlement for victims but dramatic changes to a city’s pipelines to save thousands of lives. Cheer him on as he leads hundreds of individuals against companies shilling drugs such as Fen-Phen, Yaz, Zyprexa, and Pradaxa. Empathize with him as he fights an eight-year battle against UBS Warburg for knowingly selling risky mortgages to investors before collecting compensation. Root him on as he files a sweeping action against 28 California wineries to force them to stop selling toxic wine contaminated with arsenic.

Representing everyone from the Little Rascals to Ralph Tamm in the first NFL steroid case, Burg has lived a thousand lives. Trial by Fire shows that, like with every victory in the courtroom, he doubles down for the next adventure. Performing stand-up comedy alongside Roseanne Barr, golfing with Michael Jordan, and attending President George W. Bush’s inauguration with President Bush’s father, Burg has a story to tell.

His undeniably explosive personality and inspiring tale—complete with theatrics, eccentricities, excitement, humor, and maybe just a hint of craziness—will make you laugh, leave you in disbelief, and, most of all, inspire you.

Trial by Fire Forging American Close Air Support Doctrine, World War I Through September 1944

Description

Trial by Fire: Forging American Close Air Support Doctrine, World War I Through September 1944 by Philip W. Wielhouwer
English | Oct 24, 2012 | ISBN: 1249918359 | 102 Pages | AZW3/EPUB/PDF (conv) | 3 MB

Proper doctrine for close support of American ground forces by airpower has been a tumultuous issue since the first days of combat aircraft.

Air and ground leaders struggled with interservice rivalry, parochialism, employment paradigms, and technological roadblocks while seeking the optimum balance of missions given the unique speed, range, and flexibility of aircraft. Neither ground force concepts of airpower as self-defense and extended organic artillery, nor air force theories focused on command of the air and strategic attack fit the middle ground of close air support (CAS), leaving a doctrinal void prior to American combat in World War II. This thesis focuses on the critical period from September 1939 through the doctrinal and practical crucible of North Africa, which eventually produced a resoundingly successful system. Theoretical and practical changes in organization and command, airpower roles, and the tactical air control system are examined, with subarea focus on cooperation and communications technology. Upon examination, discerning leadership, able to transcend earlier compromises and failures, emerges as the essential element for CAS success during the war. While many airpower concepts proved valid, air-ground cooperation through liaison proved indispensable, a lesson repeated even today.
